Rapid self-magnetization of laser speckles in plasmas by nonlinear anisotropic instability

چکیده
Presented here are the first kinetic two-dimensional Vlasov– Fokker–Planck calculations of inertial confinement fusion-related laser–plasma interactions, to include self-consistent magnetic fields, hydrodynamic plasma expansion and anisotropic electron pressure. An underdense plasma, reminiscent of the gas fill of a hohlraum, is heated by a laser speckle with Iλ2 = 1.0× 1015Wcmμm2 and radius w0 = 5μm. Inverse bremsstrahlung absorption of the laser and non-local electron transport lead to the development of a collisional analogue of the Weibel electromagnetic instability. The instability is seeded by magnetic fields, generated in an initial period of linear growth due to the anisotropic electron distribution arising in a laser speckle. Using the circular polarization does not generate significant fields. For linear polarization, the field generally saturates when the magnetization is ωτei > 1, and the effective growth rate is similar to the coherence time of typical laser speckles. The presence of these magnetic fluctuations significantly affects the heat fluxes and hydrodynamics in the plasma.

Modulational instability of dust ion acoustic waves in astrophysical dusty plasmas with non thermal electrons
Propagation of dust ion acoustic waves in plasmas composed of nonthermal distributed electrons and stationary dust particles is investigated. Nonlinear Schrdinger equation is derived to describe small amplitude waves, using the reduction perturbation technique. Modulation instability of dust ion acoustic waves is analysed for this system. Parametric investigation indicates that growth rate of...
متن کاملSolution and stability analysis of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations
We consider a new type of integrable coupled nonlinear Schrodinger (CNLS)equations proposed by our self [submitted to Phys. Plasmas (2011)]. The explicitform of soliton solutions are derived using the Hirota's bilinear method. We show that the parameters in the CNLS equations only determine the regionsfor the existence of bright and dark soliton solutions. Finally, throughthe linear stability an...
متن کاملNonparaxial Propagation of Intense Laser Pulses in Plasmas
Non-paraxial propagation of ultrashort, high power laser pulses in plasma channels is examined. In the adiabatic limit, pulse energy conservation, nonlinear group velocity, damped betatron oscillations, self-steepening, self-phase modulation, and shock formation are analyzed. In the non-adiabatic limit, the coupling of forward Hainan scattering (FRS) and the self-modulation instability (SMI) is...
متن کاملOn MHD waves, fire-hose and mirror instabilities in anisotropic plasmas
Temperature or pressure anisotropies are characteristic of space plasmas, standard magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model for describing large-scale plasma phenomena however usually assumes isotropic pressure. In this paper we examine the characteristics of MHD waves, fire-hose and mirror instabilities in anisotropic homogeneous magnetized plasmas. The model equations are a set of gyrotropic MHD equat...
متن کاملStability of Self-Focused Filaments in Laser-Produced Plasmas
LLE Review, Volume 80 191 The filamentation instability causes local intensity maxima in a laser beam propagating through a plasma to self-focus to high intensities. This process can affect many aspects of the beam propagation and absorption, so it has long been a subject of interest in laser–plasma interaction research. The theoretical thresholds and growth rates for the linear phase of the fi...
